First Passenger Flight in Belgium with Sustainable Aviation Fuel

In Belgium, the first passenger aircraft flight was carried out with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF_Sustainable Aviation Fuel), also known as "biokerosene". 38% of the warehouse of Brussels Airlines' flight to Malaga, Spain was filled with sustainable fuel obtained from waste cooking oil and animal fat waste. 62 percent of the aircraft's fuel consisted of kerosene. According to experts, this is a promising step for the environment. With the widespread use of SAF, it is expected that carbon dioxide emissions caused by flight will decrease by 70 percent. It is stated that this rate may increase up to 80 percent in the future.

According to Belgian state television VRT, SAF is an important option, emitting less greenhouse gases than conventional jet fuel. Air France, on the other hand, mixes 1 percent SAF into the fuel of all planes departing from France. About 40 countries around the world have started to use SAF.

Planes departing from Brussels Airport will now be able to resupply the SAF with the NATO Underground Central European Pipeline System (CEPS). With this pipeline, which connects France, Germany and the Benelux countries and also serves for civil aircraft, it is aimed to quickly refuel the NATO air fleet.

Brussels Airport spokesperson Ihsane Chioua Lekhli told VRT that they are running an awareness campaign to collect more frying oil.
The European Air Traffic Control Authority (Eurocontrol) predicts that the number of flights to Europe will increase by 44 to 76 percent by 2050. Alternative fuel is expected to help meet the majority of climate targets by 2050.

According to Brussels Airport CEO Arnaud Feist, sustainable aviation fuel is the most effective tool currently available for reducing air travel emissions.
