Family plays a big role in experiencing test anxiety.
Approximately two and a half million students will take the Higher Education Institutions Exam this weekend. Specialist Clinical Psychologist Ünal Erdem Elli, who stated that the family and the environment in general have an important place in the exam anxiety experienced, said, “It is often parents or teachers who see failure in the exam as a disaster. Therefore, the environment and family have important effects on the formation of test anxiety.
Stating that students experience a sense of anxiety in exams or exam-related issues, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Ünal Erdem Elli from Istanbul Gelişim University said, “This disturbing feeling is often accompanied by some bodily symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing and sweating. The individual is so preoccupied with the perception of threat that he has difficulty focusing on anything other than his own anxiety. As a result, he loses concentration and this usually leads to a lower success than he can show under normal conditions. Some students, on the other hand, are so disturbed by this feeling of anxiety that they start to stay away from the exam and even from activities that will remind them of the exam, such as practice exams or test-solving and related activities in general. This, of course, increases the risk of failure and creates a negative vicious circle for the individual. The student does not prepare for the exam because he is anxious, the level of anxiety rises because he is not prepared, and this begins to be perceived as an inextricable vicious circle by the student.
