Having an important place in Turkish literature with his translations and essays, Prof. Dr. 33 years have passed since Akşit Göktürk's death.
Born on December 27, 1934 in Van, Göktürk completed his primary and secondary education in Antakya, Adana and Van. After graduating from Istanbul University, Faculty of Letters, Department of English Language and Literature, he entered the same faculty as an assistant in 1961. He received his doctorate in 1965; He became associate professor in 1972 and professor in 1978. He worked as a researcher at the University of Nottingham in England and the University of Konstanz in Germany. He directed seminars on translation theories and methods at Uppsala and West Berlin universities. He won the 1969 TDK Translation Award for his first full translation of Robinson Crusoe in Turkish. He was a member of the Board of Directors of TDK between 1975 and 1983.
Between 1981-83, he gave linguistics seminars in many schools as well as being the director of the Department of Foreign Languages at Istanbul University. Göktürk, who also taught translation studies at Boğaziçi University, died on February 26, 1988.
