The first of these was the grammar-translation method. It was originally used to teach dead languages, including ancient Greek and Latin. In addition to developing intellectual abilities, the purpose of teaching by this method was to translate ancient literature and at the same time learn to read.
This method, which was introduced by the intellectuals at the end of the 18th century under the name of "grammar-translation method" (the grammar-translation method known as the Prussian method in the West), began to become widespread in the 18th and 19th centuries. It maintained its leading role until the outbreak of the First World War, when it was replaced by direct and natural methods.
Representatives of this method are W. Humboldt, D. Hamilton, G. Ollendorf, J. Jacoteau, C. Toussaint and others. The popularity of the method is explained, by its suitability for the educational goals set for foreign language learners, on the other hand, by the traditions inherited from the methods of teaching Latin in the Renaissance.
