 Localization in Translation




While a translator's job is often to translate source material, translation and localization are not the same thing. The task of localization is to convey meaning, taking into account cultural and social factors that may affect the perception of the product by the target audience to which the product is localized. On the one hand, localization is a special case of translation and indeed an integral part of any professional translation. In this sense, localization can be defined as a better, deeper, more advanced and more professional translation as opposed to a superficial, literal translation.
So, where should the line be drawn between fidelity to the source text and fluency in the target text?
