Lecturer Tuğçe Özdinç Has Presented a Paper at a Conference

Tugce Özdinç, lecturer at the Applied English Translation Program, presented her paper titled “A Crimson Jane: Intertextuality of The Crimson Petal and the White and Jane Eyre” at the Yeditepe University Graduate Conference of Literary Studies: “Rethinking / Reapproaching The Home,” held on June 10, 2022.

The differences between Michel Faber's 2002 Neo-Victorian novel "The Crimson Petal and the White" and Charlotte Brontë's 1847 Victorian novel Jane Eyre are analyzed in the paper. She stated that although Faber's novel is labeled as a rewrite of Jane Eyre by some critics, there is no one-to-one parallelism between the plot or the main characters in the novel, and since the author has no claim that this is the case, it does not fall into the category of rewriting/retelling. Özdinç stated that The Crimson Petal bears the traces of Julia Kristeva's term "intertextuality".
