Translation of works of art is a creative, versatile and ambiguous type of translation. At first glance, translating a literary work may seem simple. Works of art do not have technical terms or a professional vocabulary, however, there is a pseudo-aesthetic component. The main difficulty in translating a literary text is its transmission. So, how is the text translated so that the translation is as enjoyable to read as the original? Achieving an artistic effect is sometimes more difficult than translating precise and clear technical texts. The purpose of technical texts is to convey information, whereas artistic texts’ is to affect the readers emotionally.
The main purpose of literary translation is to convey the meaningfulness and emotional expression of the original work. It cannot be obtained if the work is translated literally, because this type of translation involves borrowing foreign styles, forms and structures into the target language. A literal translation may convey meaning, but the aesthetic and artistic component of the original text is completely lost with it. On the other hand, the desire to be too "artistic" can play a cruel joke on the translator. In fact, when translating a work, the translator constantly seeks a balance between accuracy (according to the author's text) and artistry, the acceptable deviation from what is written to make the translation understandable and enjoyable for the reader.
Often one can come across the view that only by reading the original the work can be fully felt and the translation is only a shadow. This view stems from the cultural gap between the source language and the target language. Language conveys the characteristics, mentality, ethical norms and moral values of the culture to which the author belongs. The author acts as the carrier of a unique experience that has the same emotional and aesthetic effect on the reader. However, can the translator, who is not the author of the work, can adapt the work entirely?
