 Are Language, Religion, Race and Gender Important in Translation Studies?




Afro-American poet, Amanda Gorman, read the poem titled "The Hill We Climb" at the inauguration of the new president of the United States, Joe Biden. That the translator Marieke Lucas Rijneveld has announced translating the poem Gorman had read into Dutch has created controversy. It was said in many daily newspapers that it was "provocative" for a white person to translate a poem written by a black person.
