Türkiye and Malaysia strengthen their cooperation in the defense industry with a new agreement. 18 Turkish defense industry companies exhibited their products and capabilities at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aviation Fair (LIMA 2023), one of the largest defense fairs in the Asia-Pacific region. Recently, there has been a very close cooperation between Türkiye and Malaysia. After the earthquakes in the center of Kahramanmaraş, the Malaysian government and its armed forces provided in-kind and cash support and assistance to Turkey, especially the establishment of a field hospital.
Malaysian Prime Minister Enver İbrahim visited Turkey 9 days after the earthquake and conveyed his support to the Turkish people. During the visit, mutual meetings were held for the development of international relations, while cooperation and possible projects in the field of defense industry were discussed within the framework of the visit. In the said negotiations, it was decided to establish "Interstate Sales Mechanisms" between the two friendly and brotherly countries in the field of defense industry and to maintain direct relations without intermediary companies. For this purpose, the President of the Defense Industry (SSB) has been tasked with implementing defense industry cooperation projects with the Malaysian government. In this context, the SSB submitted a draft "cooperation agreement" to the Malaysian Ministry of Defense to establish a legal infrastructure for the "cross-border sales mechanism". While negotiations continue as planned, the SSB is in direct negotiations with the Malaysian government on several projects, notably the Littoral Mission Ship (LMS) and 155mm self-propelled howitzer projects.
