The USA, which separated Turkey from the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Program by stating the reason for the S-400 supply, thinks that Turkey should make additional payments due to its rising costs. Turkey, which left the F-35 Program in September 2021, continues the contact process with the United States for the return of the 1.4 billion USD payment it made under the program. According to the information obtained by journalist Ali Çınar, the USA demands that Turkey make additional payments in addition to making this payment. The reason for the US demanding additional payment from Turkey is that Turkish companies active in the production of the F-35 left the program due to the sanctions imposed on Turkey by the US, resulting in disruptions in the F-35 supply chain and financial rise.
The United States decided to separate Turkey from the F-35 Program in 2018, as it procured the S-400 from Russia. The decision on the F-35 embargo against Turkey, which was approved by the US Senate on August 1, 2018, was approved by the US President Donald Trump on August 13, 2018 and entered into force. Turkey acquired the first two F-35 jets, numbered 18-0001 and 18-0002, in a ceremony held in the USA in June 2018. The USA first confiscated these planes in the USA for training purposes. Later, it suspended the delivery of 4 F-35 aircraft produced to be delivered to Turkey. However, Turkey was a program partner in the F-35 Program, serving not only as a supplier but also as a manufacturer.
