Turkish Airlines Pilots Association (TALPA) held a ceremony at Edirnekapı Martyrs' Cemetery on the occasion of May 15 Air Martyrs' Day. The head of TALPA and the pilots shared their pain while chatting with the relatives of the martyrs. According to the 36th article of the Turkish Aeronautical Association Establishment Directive, which was established by the order of Atatürk, January 27 is the Turkish Air Martyrs' Day. Later, with the decision of the Turkish Air Federation in 1935, it was decided to hold the ceremonies on 15 May. After that day, our air martyrs are commemorated with a ceremony every 15 May. Captain Fethi Bey, Captain Sadık Bey, and Captain Nuri Bey, who lost their lives in 1914, became the first martyrs in our aviation history as a result of the crash of their planes. The graves of Turkey's first air martyrs are in Damascus, the capital of Syria. The Turkish Air Cemetery is located within the Edirnekapı Martyrs' Cemetery. Our air martyrs are commemorated here with an annual ceremony. TALPA board members, families of martyrs, representatives of Turkish Airlines, ACT Airlines, Tassa, Pilvak, Hava İş Union, Tayyareci Vecihi Hürkuş Museums Association, Aviation Medical Association representatives, and retirees attended the ceremony held in Edirnekapı today. Head of TALPA, Capt. Plt. R. Okan Üreksoy, "When the Republic was declared as a civilization project on October 29, 1923, our aviation took off and the great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who understood the importance of aviation long before other countries, said succinctly: "One day, people will walk in the sky without an airplane, go to the planets and perhaps he will send us news from the moon. You don't have to wait for the year 2000 for this miracle to happen. The development of technology already shows this. It is our duty not to lag far behind the West in this regard.
