UTIKAD Sectoral Relations Specialist Gamze Mutlu's article titled "Training is a must in Dangerous Goods Transportation by Air" was published in the 29th issue of Utikad Magazine, which is published quarterly by the Association of International Forwarding and Logistics Service Providers (UTIKAD). Noting that air transport corresponds to a very important position in supporting the current global commercial structure, Mutlu tried to explain how important education is in air transport in her article.
Gamze Mutlu started her article as follows: ‘’ Air transport corresponds to a key position in supporting the current global trading system. When we evaluate the speed it provides and its contributions such as safe transportation, air transport has a significant role in the trade of important cargoes such as dangerous goods. Air transport provides the most advanced services with advancing technology in addition to advantages similar to speed and planned operation. According to the data shared by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the world airline industry makes an economic contribution of 2.7 trillion dollars to the economies of countries, both directly and indirectly’’.
Emphasizing the said effect, Mutlu continues her words by talking about the transformative effect of education, knowledge and consciousness in parallel with the subject: ‘’ To reach expertise in the sector, to update information, to adapt to changing ways of doing business, to dominate theoretical and practical processes, to have different perspectives and to gain experience; are the elements that make vocational training a necessity. However, the time that is not allocated to education in the busy work tempo unfortunately brings with it important mistakes. Due to the lack of training and information, both time and cost losses and irreversible accidents can be experienced in dangerous goods shipments, where safety should be kept in the forefront in air transport’’.
Noting that education plays a very important role in air transport, especially in the transport of dangerous goods, Mutlu tried to explain the practices as follows: ‘’ The important rules regarding the safe transportation of dangerous goods by air by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) are conveyed to the sector representatives. In addition, special trainings are organized by ICAO, IATA, IATA accredited airlines and authorized training institutions. However, the successful implementation of all these depends largely on education’’.
