Mustafa Tonguç, CEO of DHL Express Turkey, which is the market leader of the air cargo industry in Turkey, had an interview with the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Economy newspaper, Hakan Güldağ. Tonguç made the following statements in the interview, which conveyed the activities of DHL Express and tried to evaluate the agenda: ’’ At the beginning of 2023, there was a stuckness. Because the inflation experienced in the US and European markets in 2022 decreased the sales for e-commerce in general. We cannot call it a loss in terms of vitality, but the anticipated growth did not occur. Considering the locomotive sector of Turkey, there are some problems in textile. In particular, currency pressures cause this sector to experience difficulties. For this reason, we hear that some customers have returned to Tunisia and Egypt. However, after the second half of this year, we think that growth can be experienced in those regions as well. The war between Russia and Ukraine creates some negativities in terms of trade. For example, your plane coming to Europe via China needs to travel on a different route for 4 hours in order not to fly over the airspace of Russia and Ukraine. This, of course, creates an additional cost. Staying in the air for 4 more hours causes a cost of 70-80 thousand dollars’’.

Trying to draw attention to the sustainability activities of DHL Express Turkey, Tonguç summarizes the practices they have carried out on the subject as follows:’’ Climate change is one of the areas that should be followed very seriously in terms of the logistics sector. That's why we try to act in essence, not in words about sustainability. We have a goal of 2050 zero emissions. In Turkey, we will convert 80% of our vehicles to electric by 2025. Globally, this target for 2025 is 60 percent in total. This ratio also includes the vehicles owned by the senior management. We are also establishing a new station in Denizli. This station may be the first fully electric project in our field in the world. Within the scope of the project, both our facilities will carry out their activities with electric solar panels, and all our vehicles, including sales, will be electric. If the approvals and processes proceed as we predicted, we plan to complete it within 3 months. This will be our first zero-emission facility as a city. We are renovating our building. In this way, we were able to make electricity from scratch’’.
