The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which has 83% of the global flow in the air logistics sector, including 190 airline companies together with THY and Pegasus, has announced its air cargo forecasts for 2023. In its statements, IATA stated that although they expect 2023 to be a profitable year in aviation, the industry will still experience pressure due to geopolitical tensions.
According to the statements made by IATA based on its predictions, the losses experienced by the air logistics industry in 2022 will decrease significantly this year and the industry will reach a profitability approaching 4.7 billion dollars by reaching a 60% profit margin in general. In addition, stating that the general income of the aviation industry will reach 779 billion dollars, IATA stated that they expect the expenses to increase as well. According to IATA, these increases will be 5.3%, rising to $ 776 billion. According to IATA, which thinks that fuel will constitute 30% of the cost-related expenses, it is stated that in 2023, the prices for jet fuel per barrel are estimated to reach 138.8 dollars, and this amount will approach 229 billion dollars in total. Therefore, this year, airlines' fuel expenditure is expected to reach $222 billion by the end of the year.
According to the calculations, it is seen that the loss of airlines in 2022 is around 7 billion dollars. However, this damage shows a serious decrease compared to the total damage in the period we live in due to the effect of the pandemic. As a matter of fact, the loss in 2020, when the effect of the pandemic was seen in airline logistics, was announced as 137.7 billion dollars, while the loss in 2021 was stated as 42 billion dollars.
